Following a Legacy
But Emmett Brislawn has continued his father’s work.

“It’s what we’ve battled over for so long: to save ’em,” Emmett says.

Bunches of Spanish mustangs, about 200 in all, roam across Brislawn’s 3,000 acre ranch.

They come in all colors, but they are different than most modern horse breeds. They are somewhat smaller, with straight foreheads and long, smooth muscles. They also have a reputation for tremendous endurance.

“They’re tough, can do everything,” Emmett says. “They never quit.”

Spend some time with Spanish mustangs and you learn that they are calm, intelligent horses. Even around strangers, they’re not high-strung or wary, but curious and downright friendly.

Emmett is a man of few words. So when asked why he has devoted decades to saving the Spanish mustang, his answer is surprising.

“It’s just the romance and glamour, I suppose,” he says. “That’s as good a reason as any.”

Now a third generation has taken up the cause of the sturdy Spanish horses: Emmett’s daughter Josie.

“I’m hopefully gonna be made of strong stuff and to hang in there like these little horses and keep it going,” Josie says.

Other breeders have also joined the Brislawns’ campaign to save the ancient breed. While still rare, there are now more than 2,000 horses like these across the country. And the future of the Spanish mustang finally appears as secure as its place in history.
