Rescue Story: Peacemaker Lives To Fight Another Day

VIRGINIA CITY HIGHLANDS, NV — Sometime in the middle of October 2002, a big roan stallion wandered into Lacy’s ranch with a badly mangled front foreleg. He was also very stiff, sore in his hind legs, and bitten up badly on his sides. Lacy contacted Olivia Fiamengo of the VRWPA who arrived to assess the situation. Volunteers from the VRWPA then arrived with tall, padded panels and trapped the injured animal so that veterinarian Ian Lafoon could treat his injuries.

At first, all agreed that the horse’s leg was broken, but Dr. Lafoon finally determined that it was not. He explained it was cut badly and severely infected and, if the infection were to get into the tendon sheath, the horse would be crippled and would have to be put down. He then cleaned and treated the wound.

Lacy nursed the horse for several weeks, first with antibiotics and then with natural anti-inflammatory herbs and supplements and we are delighted to have turned “Peacemaker” back out to roam the Highlands again. He is using the leg well, has only a minor limp, and is good and fat going into the winter season.
